Solution:

  • Let speed of the flow of water be v km/h and rate of sailing be u km/h. Then, $ u+v=\frac{48}{8}=6 $ and $ u-v=\frac{48}{12}=4 $ On solving, we get $ 2u=10 $
    $ \Rightarrow $ $ u=5 $

$ \therefore $ $ v=6-5=1km/h $
