Solution:

  • Let speed of the flow of water be v km/h and rate of sailing of sailor be u km/h, Then, $ u+v=\frac{48}{8} $
    $ \Rightarrow $ $ u+v=6 $ ….(i) and $ u-v=\frac{48}{12} $
    $ \Rightarrow $ $ u-v=4 $ ….(ii) On solving Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get v = 1 km/h
