Solution:

  • Total number of students $ 50+70=120 $ Number of girls participated is 40%. i.e. $ \frac{2}{5} $ of total girls $ =50\times \frac{2}{5}=20 $ Number of boys participated is 50%. I.e. $ \frac{1}{2} $ of total boys $ =70\times \frac{1}{2}=35 $ Total participants $ =35+20=55 $ Percentage of participants $ =\frac{55}{120}\times 100=\frac{55}{6}\times 5 $ $ =\frac{275}{6}=45.8 $ % $ \approx $ 46%
