Solution:

Let the number of men in the beginning be x. Then, $ \frac{x+8}{x}=\frac{60}{50} $
$ \Rightarrow $ $ \frac{x+8}{x}=\frac{6}{5} $

$ \Rightarrow $ $ 6x=5x+40 $
$ \Rightarrow $ $ x=40 $
