Solution:

  • Relative speed of the minute and hour hand $ =5\frac{{1^{{}^\circ }}}{2} $ per min.

$ \therefore $ In 40 min, angle between them $ =40\times 5.5=220{}^\circ $ But hour hand is 90° ahead of minute hand at 3’O clock,

$ \therefore $ Required angle $ =220{}^\circ -90{}^\circ =130{}^\circ $
