  • A candidate got 40% of the total was polled in a college election. Then, his rival got $ (100-40)=60% $ of the total votes polled in the college election. Let the total number of votes polled was x. According to the question, $ x\times \frac{60}{100}=\frac{40}{100}\times x+160 $

$ \Rightarrow $ $ \frac{60x}{100}-\frac{40}{100}x=160 $

$ \Rightarrow $ $ \frac{20x}{100}=160 $
$ \Rightarrow $ $ \frac{2}{10}x=160 $

$ \Rightarrow $ $ \frac{1}{5}x=160 $

$ \Rightarrow $ $ x=160\times 5=800 $
