Quantitative Aptitude Ques 1586

Question: A boatman takes twice as long to row a distance against the stream as to row the same distance with the stream. Find the ratio of speeds of the boat in still water and the stream.

Options:

A) 2 : 1

B) 8 : 1

C) 1 : 2

D) 1 : 3

E) None of these

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: B

Solution:

  • Let boatman’s speed upstream x and his speed downstream $ =2x $

$ \therefore $ Ratio = (Speed in still water): (Speed of stream) $ =( \frac{2x+x}{2} ):( \frac{2x-x}{2} )=\frac{3x}{2}:\frac{x}{2}=3:1 $
