Question: A certain number of men complete a piece of work in 40 days. If there were 8 men more the work could be finished in 10 days less. How many men were there afterwards?

Solution:

  • Let the number of men be x. So, x men can do a work in 40 days. $ (x+8) $ men can do the same work in $ (40-10)=30days $ According to the question,

$ \therefore $ $ x\times 40=30(x+8) $

$ \Rightarrow $ $ 40x=30x+240 $
$ \Rightarrow $ $ x=24 $ The number of men afterwards $ =24+8=32men $
