Question: Two numbers are such that the ratio between them is 3: 5. If each is increased by 20, then the ratio between the new numbers so formed is 7: 9. Find the original numbers.

Solution:

  • Let the two numbers be 3x and 5x. Then, $ \frac{3x+20}{5x+20}=\frac{7}{9} $

$ \Rightarrow $ $ 27x+180=35x+140 $

$ \Rightarrow $ $ 180-140=35x-27x $

$ \Rightarrow $ $ 40=8x $

$ \therefore $ $ x=\frac{40}{8}=5 $ Hence, the numbers are 15 and 25.
