Basic Rules
Singular Subjects
- Rule: Singular subjects take singular verbs

Tricky Subjects
Subjects with Prepositional Phrases
- Rule: Verb agrees with subject, not object of preposition

Subjects with Quantities
- Time/Money/Distance: Usually singular when treated as one unit
- Ten years is a long time.
- Fifty dollars is too much.
- Five miles is too far to walk.
Subjects with ‘Each’, ‘Every’
- Rule: Always singular
- Examples:
- Each student has a textbook.
- Every person needs to register.
