Direct Speech

Indirect Speech

• Definition: Reported speech without exact words

Conversion Rules

Basic Changes

1. Remove Quotation Marks: Eliminate " "
2. Add Conjunction: Usually ’that’ (optional)
3. Change Pronouns: According to context
4. Change Tenses: Backshift sequence
5. Change Time/Place Words: Now → then, here → there
